India Rolls Out Chip-Based e-Passports Phase wise

India has rolled out e-passport in selected cities in the primary phase of the Passport Seva Program (PSP) Version 2.0 that started on 1st April 2024 according to latest report revealed by Ministry of External Affairs, GOI. Presently, Regional Passport Offices at Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, Ranchi, Tamil Nadu are issuing e-Passports to Indian citizens. More cities will start issuing e-passports in the next phases.

What is e-Passport?

The e-Passport is a combined paper and electronic passport, with an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna embedded as an inlay. Since the e-Passport has the data in printed form on the booklet, as well as encrypted in the chip, it makes it harder to forge.

Is it mandatory for the existing valid passport holders to replace their passport with e-Passport?

No. All Passports issued by Govt of India will continue to remain valid till their validity expiry date.
